Our
Mission
New Southerner is a quarterly magazine of literary journalism about
Southern people, places and issues. We encourage readers to live a more
meaningful, self-sufficient life through thought-provoking and
instructive articles on good stewardship of our land, conservation of
natural resources, neighborliness and support of local communities. We
also highlight visual art and literature that show appreciation of these
values in Southern culture.

Contributors
In addition to our regular staff, New Southerner is supported by various
writers and editors from across the country who advise us on editorial
content and assist in the production of our pages.
We commission established writers because of their experience with or
expertise in covering particular topics. However, we welcome queries on
subjects relevant to our mission.
Submission Guidelines
We welcome submissions of poetry, fiction and nonfiction. We are
especially interested in works by writers with a Southern connection,
and works written with a
Southern slant or that focus on Southern issues, people and places.
In lieu of payment, contributors receive one copy of the annual
anthology in which their work is featured.
Poetry: Up to three poems of any length and style
Fiction: One short story or novel excerpt, up to 5,000 words
Nonfiction: Up to 5,000 words of memoir and nonfiction work for
Dog-Eared. Essays for Back Porch should be brief (about 750 words),
insightful glimpses of life experiences. Light humor is appreciated, but
an overall thoughtful tone is best for our audience.
Up-and-Comer: Features the works of high school students and
undergraduate college students. One poem, any length; fiction or
nonfiction, up to 2,000 words. Please indicate "Up-and-Comer" submission
in subject line of e-mail or in header of hard copy submission.
Book and Music Reviews: Unsolicited reviews, up to 1,000 words in length, on works
by Southern authors/artists, with Southern themes, or relevant to our
mission of promoting self-sufficiency, environmentalism and local
economies.
Queries: Include proposed topic, outline, appropriate department (Fuss,
Folks & Neighborhoods, Dog-Eared, etc.) and clips of recently published work.
